High Impact Intervention Tool (HII Tool)

The Innovation

An on line system for recording and reporting High Impact Interventions (HIIs) that allows compliance rates, audit findings and internal benchmarking to drive performance was developed. Accessible via a web interface, reports are automatically sent out via email to key stakeholders at scheduled intervals and as an alert if data is not entered for a period of time.

High Impact Intervention Tool (HII Tool)

The Issues

In 2006/07 United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust (UHL) had an MRSA rate that was outside of its trajectory despite several initiatives to improve clinical practice. Whilst HIIs were undertaken, there was no system of reporting, performance improvement and no internal benchmarking. Results were not routinely available to the Trust Board or Infection Prevention and Control Committee.

The Benefits

  • The system allows audit data to be captured at the point of care by staff with minimal IT skills.
  • Provides immediate feedback about performance including benchmarking with other wards and allows any member of staff, at any level to access reports on compliance and performance trends.
  • Has an automatic alert and report function, alerting Ward Managers and Matrons when no data is recorded, when data is below a lower limit (75%), or when results are consistently very high.
  • Automatically sends reports on compliance and performance to Matrons, Clinical Leads and other managers.
