Limb Sterilisation (Sleeve)

The Innovation

The device consists of a clear plastic sleeve with an entry hole at one end sealed with a soft rubber material as used in disposable limb drapes. The other end is sealed and contains a second perforated rubber seal. A portal for application of disinfectant fluid is supplied. After completion of skin preparation the end of the sleeve can be opened and the limb removed through rubber sheet in a sterile fashion.

The Issues

Limb sterilisation is generally performed in the theatre before surgery where the disinfectant is “wiped” over the area. The volume of disinfectant used on the patient can vary drastically and it is a particularly messy job. A limb surgeon at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby wanted to standardise the sterilisation procedure whilst also allowing sterilisation to take place on the ward, saving theatre time.

• Decreases risk of patients acquiring HCAI (clinical study showed a ten times reduction in skin bacteria compared with conventional techniques)
• Less mess with skin preparation.
• Patient can help raise limbs during the prepping process.
• Operating time can be reduced as patients can be prepped outside theatre.
